Drought Educational Seminars

Preferred Landscape and Lighting puts on educational seminars or ‘lunch and learns’ for corporations to explain landscape design, irrigation, tree care, and subjects such as dealing with a drought.  We have a professional one hour seminar presented by Certified Arborists, Licensed Irrigators and professional landscape designers. Firms that we have presented to include NuStar, Pape Dawson, Cox and Smith, Padgett Strateman, Catto and Catto, DHR Architecture and Spectrum Property Management.  If your firm would be interested in one of our free seminars, let us know.  We act as subject matter experts and do not present a one hour commercial about our firm.

Drought Action Plan

As mentioned last week, San Antonio is already in Stage 2 water restrictions and it is forecasted that we will go to Stage 3 this summer.  The biggest change with stage 3 is that customers are only allowed to use spray irrigation every other week.  This will make it extremely difficult to keep your landscape healthy this summer.  So what can you do?  Besides the drip irrigation we have been discussing, here are some simple things you can do to give your landscape a fighting chance this summer.

 

There are several things you can do to get your yard ready for the drought:   

1.  Mulch your planting beds

2.  Protect new trees and plants from wildlife

3.  Already weakened trees need pruning to remove dead limbs as we reenter a drought season

4.  Trees stressed by the drought are susceptible to many different diseases including Oak Wilt and Hypoxylon Cankor.  Be sure to supplement water your trees once a week using drip irrigation in the root zone.  

5.  When replacing turf areas and plants, ensure 6" enriched topsoil is installed and use plants native to our area.

Do you want a green lawn this summer?

Sounds impossible given we are already in stage 2 water restrictions.  However, there is an amazing new technology that will allow you to have green grass during the drought and will save you money on your water bills.  It is a new underground drip irrigation system for your lawns.  This is easiest done when you are installing a new lawn but it can be done on an existing lawn.

 

Here is how it works - Tubing is trenched about 3"-4" below the grass surface and covered over with sod.  When the system comes on, the grass roots are watered -which is the only part of the grass that needs the water.  Drip irrigation is the world's most efficient type of irrigation and subsurface drip is especially so because it is unaffected by wind and evaporation resulting in 70% less water use than conventional overhead sprinklers.

Darryl to draw up some plans that allowed us to have a completely covered space so that the area would become more useable throughout all the seasons.  Darryl came back with a plan that included large timber western red cedar posts and beams, tong and groove stained pine ceilings, and a high quality built in grill.  Before he drew these plans we talked budget and time frame and they actual plans came in on target.
