Mother Natures Fertilizer - Lightning!

Have you ever noticed that after a good thunderstorm your plants and grass are more green and a little healthier?  It isn't just the water from the rain, it is also from the nitrogen that the lightning has released in the air.

The air is made up of about 80% of nitrogen and the energy from the lightning causes a conversion turning the nitrogen gas into nitrogen compounds.  This is mother natures own fertilizer.

Turn off your sprinklers!

Needless to say, we have had enough water the last few days that we won't need to water our landscape for a few weeks.  Turn off your irrigation system this week and conserve some water.  While it may seem plentiful today, we will be back to drought conditions in a few weeks and you will be glad you took advantage of mother nature.

Testimonial Tuesday

We love to hear feedback from our customers!  Here is feedback from a returning client on her most recent project...

"About 3 years after Preferred Landscape did a beautiful job on a complete renovation of our back yard, which created a wonderful outdoor living space we use just about every day,
we called them again for another idea we had in mind for the front yard. We started with only a vague idea, and Darryl came up with a great design that echoed elements of the back yard. It involved creating a completely new front patio, replacing walkways from the street and across the front of the house, and building two new stone walls.
The walkways, patio and rock walls were done by Daniel Cardenas and his team, who did a wonderful job. Daniel and the team leader, Miguel, were both excellent at communicating and
dedicated to doing high quality work and making sure they addressed any concern, however small. Miguel and his team worked tirelessly, with great attention to detail. They put in very long days to catch up after losing two days to rain. It was amazing to watch them work together as a team, with everyone having a job to do and doing it well, anticipating where help would be needed, and staying ahead of the next step. In building the stone walls, their level of craftsmanship was really an art.
We've already had a passerby pull over and want to know who did the work because it looks so awesome. The greenscape and lighting going in now will finish off another beautiful space. Thanks so much for another great job, and especially to Miguel and his team for their talent, hard work, and creativity."  ~Laurie W.

$200 landscape coupons available!

San Antonio Water Systems (SAWS) is offering customers $100 coupons on landscape materials if you replace lawn grass with drought tolerant plants.  The Watersaver Landscape Coupon will start this Saturday at the Festival of Flowers.

To receive the coupon, you need to do the following:
1.  Apply for the coupon with SAWS.  Online applications will be available 6/1 or you can call 210-704-7283.
2.  Once application is approve, customer will receive $100 coupon which can be used at a participating nursery.
3.  Replace 200 sq ft of lawn with 15 plants chosen from a list of drought tolerant plants.
4.  You must also cap any automatic sprinkler heads in that section of the lawn and use at least one yard of mulch.
5.  You can apply for up to 2 coupons if you are planning on doing 400 sq. ft.

SAWS offers two plant lists; one for shade and one for sun.  Each list contains several plants in three different categories; small evergreen, spreading perennials and large shrubs.  To qualify for the rebate you need to include at least three varieties of plants, one from each of the categories.  The specified plants need only hand watering to get established, then little if any water to survive.

"We are trying to lower people's upfront costs and give them the opportunity to get a significant discount off the materials they need to make a transformation in their landscape," according to SAWS conservation director Karen Guz.

If you are up for a DIY landscape project, the rebate offers a great incentive to transform a patch of your grass into a beautiful xeriscape bed that will save you water.
